Moderate rainfall predicted over Andaman & Nicobar Islands due to formation of Cyclonic circulation Mocha; People advised to ensure their safety

A cyclonic circulation has formed and lay over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the neighbourhood extending up to the middle tropospheric level this morning.  Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region by the 8th of May morning.

The India Meteorological Department said, it is likely to concentrate into a depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around the 9th of this month.  Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, Mocha, while moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal.   The IMD added that the system is under constant watch and being monitored regularly.

The MeT Department has said moderate rainfall at most places from the 8th to 12th of this month will occur over Andaman and  Nicobar Islands.  It has advised fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Andaman Sea from tomorrow onwards and into the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal from the 9th of this month onwards.

Those who are over the southeast Bay of Bengal are advised to return to safer places before tomorrow and those over the central Bay of Bengal are advised to return before the 9th of this month.  The IMD has also asked for regulation of tourism and offshore activities and shipping over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 8th to the 12th of this month.
